The WDR Directory of Directories is not a general web directory. We list the directories that list the other sites on the Internet. We link to directory sites and to directory resources only, as you can see from our categories and category descriptions. In other words, we list directories and directory resources, not regular websites.
The vast majority of the listings found in the WDR Directory of Directories have been actively sought out and added by our administrative or editorial staff, but we do accept suggestions.
Due to frequent attacks from hackers trying to gain access to our administrative area, we are no longer accepting submissions through the regular submission process. However, if you believe that your directory, or directory resource, will be an asset to the WDR Directory of Directories, and our users, please submit the URL through our Suggest URL form. If we like what we see, we will add it to our listings, free of charge.
There are no paid options for inclusion in the WDR Directory of Directories. Our directory of directories is a project of Web Directory Reviews Org, and a free resource to our users. Currently, we have no paid submission options, nor do we accept advertising, or require a reciprocal links, and there are no plans to change these policies in the near future. If you find us to be a valuable resource, and one that may be relevant to your users, we certainly wouldn’t discourage you from linking back to us, but this is not a requirement, nor would it have any bearing on whether or not we choose to list to your directory or resource.
It couldn’t be easier to suggest a site. If your site is a web directory of any kind, or a web directory resource, simply click the Suggest URL button in our navigation bar and send us the URL to your directory. Alternatively, you may suggest your directory or directory resource to us through our Twitter or Facebook pages. You may also suggest it via email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
We will visit your directory and, if we decide that it would be an asset to the WDR Directory of Directories, we will add it, writing both a short and a long description based on what we find on your directory. In doing so, we make every effort to be positive
When you contact us, let us know which subpages (if any) you would like to have included in the description, as well as any other instructions you might have for us, and we will do our best to accommodate you, within our listing guidelines. If there are any particular keywords or key phrases you would like us to use, we will consider such requests, although we make no promises. Two deep links are allowed for regular listings and, in the absence of a request, we will randomly choose deep links. For directories that we particularly like, or those belonging to active members of our forum, or those which were submitted at the time when we were accepting premium listings, we may include up to deep links in the description.
The following guidelines will be applied to directories added to the WDR Directory of Directories by its editors, and are intended for our editors, as a guide for the listing and placement of directory sites:
The title must be the actual name of the directory or directory resource, and should not include extraneous keywords.
The WDR Directory of Directories is comprised of six top-level categories. Some of these contain subcategories, and some of the subcategories are themselves subdivided, organizing information from the general to the specific.
When choosing a category to submit to, be as specific as possible. Choose the one category that is most appropriate for the directory or directory resource site. If, at your discretion, you determine that the listing should be included in an additional category or categories, place it there, but make every attempt to find the one best category for each listing. When a directory is appropriately listed in more than one category, it is not necessary to add it twice; rather, you should simply check the additional category as well as the original one. The criteria for making this decision should rest solely upon your assessment of what would be best for our users.
If the directory features a tag line, use that, and use it even if it is promotional in nature. Otherwise, in this section, enter a few carefully chosen words about the directory or site that will grab a reader’s attention. This will appear just below the title on the listing’s detail page. This is one field that may include mildly promotional language, or a sentence fragment. For example, if I were to list the WDR Directory of Directories, I might choose, as a tagline, “We list the sites that list the sites.”
For reasons that I have no control over, long tag lines will not display in the directory, although they may fit within the field provided for a tag line, so keep it brief.
The text that you enter into this field will appear in search results from in-site searches, and within category listing pages. The short description should summarize the site in two or three sentences, which should be grammatically correct, using proper spelling and punctuation. Roughly speaking, this field shouldn’t be longer than five hundred characters or so. Please do not copy and paste text from the site or use the same description that you have used in other directory listings.
Depending on how the full description is crafted, in some cases, the first paragraph of the long description might be used as a short description.
We encourage long, informative, unique descriptions in this field, and have set no limits on the length of the content included in this field. Although it is not always possible, try to extend the long description to at least three hundred words. We don’t mind if words used in the title or category name are repeated in the description when it makes grammatical sense to do so within a sentence. We also encourage the listing of the directory’s top-level categories, as this gives our readers a clear idea of what can be found on each of the directories that we list.
Within the text of the full description, the directory’s own submission guidelines may be summarized. However, please do not copy and paste them from the site, because we do not want detail pages to be flagged as duplicate content by the search engines. A uniquely written description serves to better promote the WDR Directory of Directories and the listings in it.
If you are listing a directory, please do include information about whether submissions to the site are free or whether payment of a fee or a reciprocal link is required. For the purposes of this directory, we do not consider the requirement of a reciprocal link to be a free listing, although we make no other judgements about reciprocal link policies. We also encourage the inclusion of any prices that are not likely to change soon. In other words, if the directory is advertising a limited offer, we wouldn’t want to include that. Periodically, we will be visiting listed sites to determine whether included information is up-to-date, but we will appreciate it if directory owners or operators, or users of our site, will notify us of any changes.
For the purposes of this directory, we will be using this field to track whether a directory offers free listings, requires a reciprocal link, or whether payment of a fee is required. Currently, the allowable tags are:
In many cases, multiple tags may be used. For example, if a directory accepts free listings, but promises a more rapid review if a reciprocal link is provided, and also offers paid featured link options, then the free, reciprocal, and paid tags will be used. This is an important field, as listings will also be searchable and browsable according to these options.
When the site is added by WDR Directory of Directories staff, then a staff email will be included in this space. However, when a directory is suggested by a directory owner or agent, then the email that they provide will be included here. This email address is not published to the site, but will be used in the event that a user wishes to contact the listed directory. Any comments received by WDR Directory of Directories staff will be passed on to the directory owner whenever possible.
This is the link to the directory or directory resource that you are listing, so this is an important field. This should be a complete address, beginning with http://. This should also be the shortest version of the URL, which should end in a trailing slash. We prefer the inclusion of the www. within the URL, but only so long as the site works with it. If the www. is removed by the browser when visiting the site, then it should be excluded here, as well.
When a physical address is available on the site, please add it.
Our criteria for listing a web directory or other directory resource is entirely focused on what might be of use to the people who visit the WDR Directory of Directories. People may come here looking for directories to submit their site to, or they may be directory owners or agents who are checking out the competition, or they may have come here for other reasons.
The vast majority of the directories or directory resources that are included in the WDR Directory of Directories have been actively sought out and added by the directory administration and staff. Some directories were added after their owners or agents began participating in our forum, and others were suggested to us, either through out Suggest form or via our Facebook or Twitter pages.
When someone suggests a directory to us, we look for reasons to add it, rather than for reasons to exclude it. Therefore, our directory of directories includes some directories that are new, and which don’t yet have a lot of content. We do this because everyone has to start somewhere, and we’d like to see new directories succeed. However, we do periodically review the listings in our directory, removing new directories that are not progressing at a reasonable pace, or which are not following reasonably acceptable guidelines.
We reserve the right to determine whether, where, and how a directory or directory resource is listed within the WDR Directory of Directories. Site placement and editing of directory listings is at our sole discretion, and we reserve the right to disallow any specific keywords in titles or descriptions, to decline submissions, move listings to another category or subcategory, and to make any changes that we deem necessary at any time, and for any reason. We reserve the right to remove any listing without notice if we determine, at our sole discretion, that the site violates any of our rules or policies, or if we are unable to access it for an extended period of time.
We do not require or request a reciprocal link, which should not be interpreted as saying that we do not want any. If you believe that your listing in the WDR Directory of Directories has been helpful to you, or if you believe that your readers would be interested in us, and you wish to link to our directory, we would not discourage that.
Thus far, no one has asked for their listing to be removed from the WDR Directory of Directories but, were we to receive such a request, it would probably be denied. The WDR Directory of Directory exists as a resource for our users, and not as a repository for back links so, as long as a listing serves as a resource to our users, it will remain.
We do, however, remove directories that are no longer accessible, or which otherwise violate our policies and guidelines for listing sites. We maintain a list of directories and other resources that have been removed, and you may find the link to this page on the bottom of our pages. Periodically, directories that have been removed for accessibility problems are reassessed by our staff and, when warranted, they are reinstated. When this occurs, the listing will remain on our “Removed Directories” page, but a notation will be made indicating that it has been reinstated. We do this so that we can flag directories that are frequently unavailable.
If your directory or directory resource has been removed from the WDR Directory of Directories and the problem, whatever it was, has been corrected, please let us know and we will reassess your site and, if warranted, reinstate it.
PROJECT HONEY POT
The WDR Directory of Directories participates in Project Honey Pot, which is a distributed system for identifying spammers and the spambots that they use in order to scrape addresses from websites. Our participation in this project should be invisible to our human visitors, or effect their experience here in any manner.
No humans are harmed as a result of this project. Throughout our pages you may find some unobtrusive links that lead to a brief page that states our terms and conditions of use, as they may pertain to spambots. If you were to view the source of this page, you would see that it includes an email address, which wouldn’t ordinarily be viewed by humans visiting the page, but which may be scraped by spambots. If this address begins receiving email, Project Honeypot can, not only determine that the messages are spam, but also tell the exact moment when the address was harvested and the IP address that gathered it.
Project Honey Pot collates, processes and shares the data gathered with participating webmasters, and will also work with law enforcement authorities to track down and prosecute spammers, as harvesting email addresses from websites is illegal under several anti-spam laws. Additionally, Project Honey Pot will periodically collate the email messages they receive and share the results with anti-spam developers and researchers.
What does this mean to you? Unless you are a bot who has come here to harvest email addresses, it will have no effect on your experience here. We do not publish email addresses gathered during the course of submissions to our directory. Our message system routes comments left by visitors to our listing pages through our servers, which does not leave anyone else’s email address exposed to humans or spam bots, unless someone opts to leave their email in comment, which we do not suggest.
Project Honey Pot was created by Unspam Technologies, an anti-spam company.
