Throughout human history, perhaps, people have engaged in one form of sport or another, and some sports have been with us for thousands of years.

A sport usually involves competitive physical activity which both helps participants to improve or maintain their physical skills and abilities while providing entertainment to participants and spectators. Some sports involve only two participants, competing as individuals, while others require teams.

Historically, a sport was recognized as an activity based on athleticism or physical dexterity, precluding games that do not involve this physical element from recognition as a sport. In recent years, however, a number of non-physical games, such as chess and bridge, have been recognized as mind sports.

Sports are generally governed by a set of rules that players must abide by, ensuring a fair competition and, in some cases, the safety of participants.

Records of performance are also kept, particularly in organized sports, which are sometimes announced and reports in sports news publications and broadcasting venues.

A game, on the other hand, is a more general term, and one that includes those games that are thought of as sports. A game involves structured playing, and may be played for exercise, enjoyment, or as a form of education.

Games involve goals, rules, challenge, and interaction; although, in the case of children's games, these are sometimes made up on the fly. Usually, games involve physical or mental stimulation, and many serve as a form of physical exercise, or help to develop practical skills.

Games might include lawn games, tabletop games, board games, card games, dice games, tile games. pencil and paper games, guessing games, video games, online games, roleplaying games, simulations, or team-building games, as well as any of the large variety of games referred to as sports.

For the purpose of categorization here, directories of games or sports may be listed in this category, which may be subcategorized if the number of listed directories suggest a need for it.
